When I began my sober journey back in November 2023, I had no idea how profoundly it would change my life. The first 60 days were a mental struggle, but I found solace and focus in writing a cookbook and testing out all the recipes. Over several months, I poured my heart into curating this book, compiling all the valuable information I’ve learned over the last 15 years of my wellness journey. I was determined to truly nourish my body after finally giving up alcohol.
The Challenges of Detox
The path to sobriety wasn’t easy. I faced night sweats, insomnia, and the unpleasant side effects of detoxing. To combat these challenges, I turned to a local wellness spa for infrared therapy, red light therapy, and massages. At home, I engaged in soothing self-care practices to help me unwind and sleep better.
My Self-Care Rituals
Here are some of the self-care rituals that helped me through the tough times:
1. Skincare Routine: A several-step process involving cleansing, a red light therapy mask, and applying deeply nourishing oils or creams.
2. Reading Under Red Light: I bought a cheap floor lamp with red bulbs to mimic the effect of sun downing, helping my body recognize bedtime cues.
3. Gentle Yoga, Stretching, or Meditation: These practices helped calm my mind and body.
4. Journaling: Writing down my emotions and thoughts helped me release them and gain clarity.
Nourishing My Body
Years of struggling with an eating disorder and alcoholism had left my body undernourished. I created a 28-day meal plan that my family and I could follow to kickstart our healing. Despite working on my health for 15 years, I was blind to the fact that my alcohol use was undermining my progress. Proper nutrition, regular workouts, and supplements couldn’t compensate for the damage caused by alcohol.
The Transformation
By the end of those 28 days, my health had significantly improved. My digestion was regular, the bloating was gone, my hormonal acne had decreased, and my sleep was vastly improved. It’s incredible how much fad diets and alcohol can hold you back from achieving the health you desire. Returning to a whole food diet, similar to how our ancestors ate, can truly change your life.
