Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Filling of your choice (e.g., mashed potatoes, cheese, sauerkraut, mushrooms)
Instructions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the egg, sour cream, and softened butter.
2. Using your hands or a fork, mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic.
3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes at room temperature.
4. While the dough is resting, prepare your desired filling.
5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness. Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out circles of dough.
6. Place a small spoonful of filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape, then pinch the edges firmly to seal.
7. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Drop the pierogi in batches into the boiling water and cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
8. Remove the cooked pierogi with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a plate. Repeat the cooking process with the remaining pierogi.
9. Once all the pierogi are cooked, you can serve them immediately with toppings like sour cream, sautéed onions, or butter, or you can fry them in a skillet until golden brown on both sides for extra crispiness.
Enjoy your homemade pierogi!
