If you've been following my journey, you know that bees have always held a special place in my heart. There's something magical about these tiny creatures and their incredible impact on our world. I've long dreamed of becoming a beekeeper, tending to hives and helping these amazing insects thrive. In the meantime, I’ve filled my yard and garden with flowers to support the bees, providing them with nectar while they help pollinate my plants. It’s a win-win, right?
But here's the thing—bees are so much more than just honey makers. They are vital to our survival. Without them, our world as we know it would collapse. So, when I learned that some companies are harvesting more than just honey from beehives, creating products that support our immune system, gut, brain, and sinuses, I had to know more. And let me tell you, I dove headfirst into the research, and what I found was truly mind-blowing.
What is Bee Propolis?
Bee propolis is a resinous, waxy substance that bees make from tree sap, beeswax, their saliva, and other plant and tree compounds. Think of it as the bees' own version of a multi-tool—they use it to build and repair their hives, preserve honey, and protect themselves from invaders and harsh weather.
Propolis is often referred to as the bodyguard of the beehive. Bees line the walls of their hives with it to keep germs and pathogens out. And guess what? We can use it too! Propolis has been found to support our immune system, soothe scratchy throats, and even combat free radical damage in the body.
What Makes Propolis So Special?
Naturally, bee propolis is packed with vitamins B, C, and D, as well as zinc, iron, antioxidants, flavonoids, and polyphenols. These components make it a powerful ally in promoting overall health. Let’s break it down:
- Immunomodulatory: Propolis helps regulate the immune system, making it more effective in fighting off infections.
- Anticancer: Research suggests that propolis may have properties that help fight cancer cells.
- Antimicrobial: It’s been shown to fight bacteria, viruses, and fungi, making it a great natural remedy for preventing infections.
- Anti-inflammatory: Propolis can help reduce inflammation and promote skin healing.
- Antioxidant: It contains polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that can protect our cells from damage.
It’s fascinating to think that something bees use to protect their hives can also protect us in so many ways!
A Glimpse Into History
Humans have been using propolis for centuries—dating back to at least 300 BC! The ancient Egyptians, known for their advanced beekeeping, used propolis in their embalming processes. The ancient Jews mentioned it in the Old Testament as a medicine, and the Greeks and Romans used it for everything from disinfecting mouths to treating wounds. Even during World War II, propolis was used to treat wounds due to its antibacterial properties. This natural remedy has stood the test of time, and it's no wonder people are turning to it today for its numerous health benefits.
How to Use Propolis
Propolis is available in many forms—extracts, tinctures, capsules, powders, sprays, ointments, and creams. You can find it in health food stores or online. But, as with any natural remedy, it's important to be aware of potential allergies and risks. People allergic to bee products or certain trees should be cautious, and if you’re on blood-thinning medication or have asthma, you should consult with your doctor before using it.
My Personal Experience
I want to be clear—this is not a paid ad. I just genuinely love this product and want to share my experience with you. I personally use the Beekeeper’s Naturals brand propolis throat spray and their 3-in-1 Complete Gut Health. The throat spray is my go-to whenever I feel a scratchy throat coming on. A few sprays, and I feel relief within minutes. As for the gut health product—wow. After years of struggling with gut issues due to extreme dieting and alcohol abuse, I’ve finally found something that works. Within the first 30 days, I noticed a huge improvement. No more bloating, and my digestion is on point!
