The Spark: A Song That Hit Me
I was listening to the Unashamed podcast with the Robertson’s on my way to work and Jase brought up a song, - Honey in the Rock by Brandon Lake and Brooke Ligertwood.
I pulled out my phone to pull up the song and take a listen for myself before finishing the podcast — and man, did it hit!
It is a great song to listen to. Listen here.
I then went back to the podcast and Jase began stating how this is from the bible. Of course I want to know more because I am finding more and more that you can find almost anything in the bible which just blows my mind because I missed it for so long even though I grew up in a faith based lifestyle.
Let’s do a quick scripture study from Psalms 81. Truly understanding things helps me bring it into vision and see how it applies to my life.

Scripture Study: Psalm 81
So put this down for a minute or a few and go read Psalms 81 then come back.
What It Teaches Us
Now that you are back, let’s dive in.
Verses 1-5 starts out by worshipping God through song. They are singing with joy for God and what he gave them while escaping Egypt.
Think About It: Gratitude & Praise
Are there things that you should be grateful to God for?
Have you thanked Him for those blessings?
Verses 6-7 is talking about how He heard their cries for help and came running to their aid.
Think About It: Trust & Crying Out
Have there been times that you cried out for help from God?
If not, have there been times when things have been difficult and you felt like everything you did got you nowhere?
If you had support backing you up how would that have changed those times?
Verses 8–10 is about God having to let us go because He is not a forceful Father. He wants our love willingly.
There is so much here in just these two lines. It’s like a parent dealing with a child who is extremely rebellious and just will not be a team player with the family — so you have to let them go do what they want.
Another example would be like an addict. You can love them with all your heart and wish them the best but if they will not change their ways they will end up dying. They have to be willing to change and accept your love for that relationship to flourish.
We are given this choice yet today whether we are deep in the throes of a pit we dug ourselves into or have been living what we think is the right way.
Think About It: Control & Surrender
With that in mind are there areas where we could use help, yet we think we can do it ourselves?
Are you holding onto control?
Are you following a path that you think is the right way to get what you need and want but it is not working out?
Are you fully submissive to God and listening for His guidance?
Disclaimer: We still have to do things. We’re not going to have everything handed to us on this earthly plane because that’s not how this human experience is designed. We live in governed areas where we must work to pay bills, taxes, and buy things to sustain our human bodies. But when we invite God in as a partner, leader, savior, etc. things shift for the better and become a whole lot sweeter.
Verses 13-15 God wants to bless us because he loves us that much. Think of this way: would a parent bless a defiant child? If your answer is yes, how do you think that child is going to turn out? Entitled no matter what they do.
Life is not always rainbows and sunshine. No matter what phase of life you are in you are going to go through times of struggle whether that is through school being bullied or misunderstood by others, early adulthood trying to make enough money to pay all your bills and still have some semblance of a social life, parenthood guiding children so they can grow into self sufficient adults that contribute to society, marriage is riddled with trials and tribulations that can be from your relationship together, parenting struggles, finances, you name it tack it in the marriage category.
Through all of these struggles, if we lean on God and keep Him in our corner all the time — not just when we need Him — He will help us through it all.
Think About It: Endurance & Blessing
Have you been through difficult times that seemed to work out because you trusted in God?
Are you not feeling blessed?
If you trusted in God during these difficult times how do you think it would be different?
Verse 16 - But he would feed Israel with the best wheat. “I would satisfy you with honey from the rock.”
Even in hard times we can be blessed. He will give us sweetness and abundance even in hard places. He wants to pour out his blessings over us, we just have to want it.
Think About It: Sweetness in Hard Places
If you let God take the wheel and are open to going with the flow even when you do not understand, what do you think would change in your life?
Where would sweetness increase if you let Him guide you?
A Sweet Reminder from the Rock
When we break it down, Psalm 81 offers a simple rhythm for living in faith.
Celebrate — God’s love.
Remember — what He has done for you.
Listen — when He speaks.
Return — to Him when we wander.
Wandering is going to happen even if we are followers of Christ’s teachings. It is so easy to get sucked into this human existence and what is thrown at us consistently. We can get duped into those earthly and fleshly desires, sometimes without even realizing it. It can be from following people on the internet, watching the news, seeing movies that depict something we do not have, or others in our community that we think have more than we do.
Final Reflection
Think About It: Returning to the Source
Have you been wandering — even unintentionally — by letting earthly desires or comparisons guide you?
How can you invite God back into that space today?
If you are struggling, I encourage you to talk to our creator. Share your thoughts, feelings, and hurts with Him. Even if it is comparison to others. Ask him to remind you of your strengths and blessings. Ask Him to guide you through your struggle. Be open to receiving his messages. And thank Him for his unwavering love.
This is my ted talk on Psalms 81 which got sparked from a podcast suggesting a great song.
It’s funny how a song like Honey in the Rock can remind us that no matter how dry life feels, there’s still sweetness when we seek Him. That lyric “sweetness at the mercy seat” hits differently when you realize it’s a direct echo of God’s promise in Psalm 81.
See, he works in mysterious ways!
If this message spoke to you — share it.
Someone in your circle might be walking through a dry season and need a reminder that there’s still honey in their rock.
Tag me T. Sorenson and let’s spread the sweetness of God’s word together. 🍯💛
