Unmasking Detoxification: The Real Benefits and Limitations (Plus, the Ugly Truth)

So, here’s the deal—I’ve spent the past 15 years treating my body like a toxic waste dump. From cramming junk food into my face to guzzling alcohol to numb the constant whirlpool of stress, my adrenals, kidneys, liver, thyroid, and lymph nodes were basically waving a white flag. Those hardworking organs? They were trying to help me detox, but I just kept dumping garbage on them.

Let's take a moment to appreciate the full spectrum of my unhealthy habits. We're talking bingeing, restricting, drinking to “relieve” anxiety (yeah, that works so well), zoning out for hours with Netflix, and scrolling mindlessly like my life depended on it. Spoiler: It didn’t. If I could have deteriorated any more, I would’ve been a walking skeleton by now.

Somewhere between the self-sabotage and the junk food binges, I realized I had to maybe make a change. So, I turned to yoga—because nothing says “I’m getting my life together” like some deeply spiritual stretches and breathing exercises, right? I also started swapping out toxic cleaning products and body care items (because who doesn’t want to feel like a wellness warrior, right?).

Cue the alarm bells. Apparently, if you overwork your organs long enough, they give up on doing their job—like digesting food properly, which leads to a host of issues: adrenal fatigue, low blood sugar, thyroid rebellion, borderline anemia (yay), and gut dysbiosis that basically made me a walking disaster.
